Preparing for Your Maternity Photoshoot: A Comprehensive Guide
Pregnancy is a season of transformation. Your body is growing life, your heart is expanding, and somewhere in the midst of it all—you deserve to feel celebrated, seen, and beautiful.
Maternity photography is more than just photos; it’s a way to honour the version of yourself that is doing the incredible work of motherhood. If you’re thinking about booking a session (or you’ve already booked one with me—hello, beautiful!), here’s everything you need to know to feel relaxed, confident, and ready.
When Should I Book My Session?
In my honest opinion, this is something that is personal to you, its your season - so whatever you choose I am happy to follow your lead. If you were looking to display the full effect of your body’s incredible ability to host a nearly fully cooked babe, the sweet spot is between 35 and 37 weeks. The most important thing? Booking early. My calendar can fill up months in advance - and because I am a specialist birth photographer I do prioritise my birth bookings, so reach out as soon as you're ready.
Studio or Outdoor? You Choose.
There’s something timeless about being photographed in nature, but outdoor sessions aren’t for everyone—and we all know Wellington weather doesn’t always play nice.
That’s why I offer both outdoor and studio options. My new Maungaraki Photography studio is light-filled and intentionally styled with soft textures, dried florals, and warm, neutral tones. It’s a calming space where you can fully relax and just be. Whether you want earthy greens or the controlled comfort of a studio, we’ll create something that feels right for you.
What Should I Wear?
The vibe is effortless beauty. Think:
Flowing dresses with texture
Pale, earthy tones
I also have a small wardrobe of materials and dresses that photograph beautifully—plus I love playing with movement and light to really bring your images to life.
And yes—if you’re open to it, bare skin is always welcome. There’s something so powerful about capturing your body just as it is in this moment. It’s completely optional, of course, but many mamas later say those were their favourite shots.
What About Posing? I’m Not a Model!
You absolutely don’t need to be. I’ll gently guide you through the whole session, suggesting natural movements and poses that feel right for you. Most of all, I want you to feel comfortable and beautiful. We’ll laugh, pause, adjust, and create images that feel like you—not a stiff version of yourself.
Why It Matters
Right now, life is full. And later, these memories can get hazy. But the images we create? They’ll bring you back. To the anticipation. The connection. The love. This is a once-in-a-lifetime season. Let’s honour it.
